Old Woman: Story #06

An old woman lived in a village far from the city, she had two daughters.  She worked hard all her life, raising daughters and marrying them both with all her earnings.  The eldest daughter was married to a shopkeeper selling rain protection items, while the younger daughter’s husband worked as a washerman.

There were two special conditions in the conditions, one sunny and the other rainy.  On a sunny day the old lady used to worry about her elder daughter, “It is such a nice weather, the sun is blooming. Why would anyone buy a raincoat in such a situation? People have no problem, the elder daughter’s husband’s shop will be closed.”  ”  The more she thought about the rain and the eldest daughter, the more sad she became and eventually started crying.  Similarly, when the clouds came and it started raining, she used to worry about her little daughter, “How will her wet clothes dry now? Her job is to clean the clothes and iron them. Her job is to stop.  So what will she earn and what will she eat?”  In this way, whether it was sunny or heavy rain, in both the circumstances, she used to get very sad and started shedding tears.  Her neighbors also got tired of her condition and named ‘the weeping old lady’.

No one said anything nor gave any suggestion, but a thought came automatically in the mind of the old lady that ‘meet some saint’.  The old lady made up her mind and met a saint.  She was curious to know why she is always crying!  When the old lady told her confusion to the saint, he started laughing.  Said, “There is no need for you to cry now. I will show you the way to be happy.”  Immense reverence for the saint had already made a place in the old lady’s mind.  She sat down in front of the saint with folded hands with both her hands.  The saint said, “Now you don’t have to worry, only one small change is to be made that now you have to think in reverse. On a sunny day you have to think of your little daughter that her actions will go well and those who are rainy day has to think about the elder daughter that her shop will run well.”  Eventually the old lady understood things.  After meeting the saint, no matter what the weather was, she was not seen crying but smiling.  Now for the people she became a ‘smiling old lady’ instead of a ‘weeping old lady’.
